Fire damages Moss' Madison apartment
KEVIN MURPHYMadison A cooking fire on Monday morning at former University of Wisconsin Madison football star Brent Moss' apartment did an estimated $25,000 damage, the Fire Department said.
A building resident reported the two-alarm fire at 6:59 a.m. at 1205 MacArthur Road. Two people were present at the time of the fire, but Moss was not, said Steve Dahlgren, department spokesman.
A smoke alarm awakened the people in Moss' apartment, Dahlgren said. The fire began on the kitchen range and heavily damaged the kitchen. Smoke caused considerable damage throughout the two-story unit and left it uninhabitable, Dahlgren said.
Adjacent apartments in the six-unit building sustained minor smoke damage, he said.
The department listed the grease fire as accidental.
Moss, 25, was a UW senior last fall when he was dropped from the team after being arrested in Madison for possession of crack cocaine valued at $30. He was placed on two years' probation Nov. 17 and ordered to perform 25 hours of community service.
Contacted Monday afternoon at his parents' home in Racine, Moss said he didn't know anything about the fire and hadn't decided whether to return to Madison to recover any belongings at the apartment.
"Right now, I'm just doing what I should be doing," Moss said. He declined to say what his plans were.
"Just treat this like any other fire," he asked.
Moss didn't register for the spring semester at UW, school officials said.
