Food: Fancy a brew?
Elizabeth StephensonBefore Play hit the high street, vegan Moby had always dreamed of a funky cafe where he could chill with his eco-warrior mates and chat about saving the world. A place with vegetarian food and lots and lots of Rosie Lee. And now he's sold more records than there is tea in China he's only gone and done it. He's transformed a New York hair salon into TeaNY, a tea-green canteen serving tea, Belgian beers, champagne mojitos, and red and white sangria. The meatless menu boasts tomatillo-squash soup, 'teany bagels' with melted Cheddar and faux Canadian bacon and vegan vanilla- bean strawberry shortcake, all of which can be washed down with an iced soy chai latte.
'For a long time I've wanted to own a vegetarian-vegan cafe. So my friend Kelly and I opened one. We called it TeaNY, because it mainly features tea. I'm kinda obsessed with tea, like herbal tea, green tea and black tea,' says the technocentric music maestro. 'We have about 120 different types of tea and nice food, too. It's a really lovely place. My main interest in opening it was so I would have a nice place I could go and eat at in my neighbourhood. I'm there every day.'
Luckily, Kelly is in charge of the kitchen, as Moby is a self- confessed 'culinary disaster area'.
Moby's Pan Bagnia
The tucker that gets Moby's toes tapping is not your everyday cheese butty. The Pan Bagnia is an epic four-layered affair to try and get your chops round and, whether you're a veggie or fully- fledged meat eater, it's certainly a sandwich to sink your teeth into.
YOU WILL NEED
2 tomatoes, thinly sliced
handful of rocket
1 red pepper
150ml/5fl oz vinegar
Ciabatta bread
1 jar olive tapanade
50g/2oz pecorino cheese bunch of fresh basil leaves
Slice the tomatoes and wash, dry and coarsely chop the rocket. Roast the red pepper and then marinade in vinegar. Take the ciabatta bread and apply a layer of olive tapanade. On top of the tapanade place the marinated pepper. Add a layer of rocket, followed by a layer of tomatoes and basil. If you're vegetarian and dairy is allowed, grate the pecorino and sprinkle on the top. Serve with a side salad.
