Parapsychology In Introductory Psychology Textbooks: Ten Years On

ABSTRACT: Thirty-nine introductory psychology textbooks published between 1990 and 1999 were reviewed for the extent and quality of coverage of parapsychology. The review aimed to update and extend a similar review of textbooks published in the 1980s (Roig, Icochea, & Cuzzucoli, 1991). Eighteen (46%) texts included coverage of parapsychology. The quantity and quality of coverage was variable across texts. A notable improvement in the accuracy of coverage in such texts since Roig, et al.'s review is likely due to the publication of a review of a dominant parapsychological research paradigm in a major psychological journal (Bem & Honorton, 1994). Textbook authors continue to be skeptical of parapsychological findings but are generally willing to suspend judgement.
