People, Places, and Environments * Historical Research
As part of our sixth-grade curriculum, we study United States history. To motivate my students and meet my curriculum objectives, the State Game project was born!
Students choose a state to research using almanacs, encyclopedias, and the Internet. Each child then designs his or her individual board game that incorporates at least 25 questions about the state, such as its motto, capital, and population. The form of each of the games, including the design board, rules, and method of play, is up to the student. The children make everything, including game pieces, and provide directions!
On a prearranged day, students set up their games. With a buddy, they play several of the other students' games for about 50 minutes. We do this until all children have had the opportunity to try out as many as possible of their classmates' games.
