No, really, Edinburgh is smiles better

DON'T laugh. Edinburgh is home to the most friendly and welcoming people in Britain, according to a new nationwide survey.

The city which gave rise to the classic statement: "You'll have had your tea?" is a more hospitable town than big, old, gallus Glasgow. John McCormack, duty manager of the city's Doric Tavern, said: "That's the first time I've ever heard people in Edinburgh get called that. I think we are friendly but I'm from Edinburgh, so I would say that."

Nicola Doughty, who is from Glasgow but now lives in Edinburgh, said: "I find that the Scots in general are friendlier than the English.

"But I am surprised that they have pinpointed Edinburgh people. There's not as much banter as there is through in Glasgow."

Glaswegians were less than enthused at being beaten to the post by their Edinburgh rivals. Amanda Strachen, 17, who is from Kelvinside, said: "I've been to Edinburgh loads of times to visit my aunties and my cousins but I think people from Glasgow are definitely more friendly. People from Glasgow are more approachable - I stopped to ask someone the time in Edinburgh once and they bit my head off."

The survey, conducted by Play UK, a digital comedy channel, also rates Scots the friendliest folk in the whole of the UK.

It polled 1000 people from across the country, who were aged between 18 and 35. Unsurprisingly, Scots were found to be top notch in the drinking department as well.
