A Room with a View
Jacqueline EdwardsA ROOM WITH A VIEW. E.M. Forster. 1908/1991. Read by Joanna David. 6 cds. 7.5 hrs. Audio Partners. 1-57270-346-6. $29,95. Plastic; plot, author, reader notes. SA*
At the beginning of the 20th century, Lucy Honeychurch begins a journey to Florence chaperoned by her spinster aunt; they are very disappointed to discover their hotel room does not have the promised view of the river Arno. George Emerson and his father shock the small society of staid English guests by offering to exchange their rooms with the ladies. From this claustrophobic, conventional, Victorian beginning, Forster uses a delightfully light, humorous and subtle touch to lead Lucy to a surprisingly radical view of propriety, religion and a woman's role.
David's voice is sweet and gentle, but forceful when necessary. Her excellent reading is as subtle as the text and voiced, although she does not attempt a male voice.
