Time & Tide
Vivian BergTIME & TIDE (A WALK THROUGH NANTUCKET). Frank Conroy. 2004. Read by the author. Abridged. 2 cds. 2 hrs. Random House Audio. 0-7393-0824-6. $19.95. Plastic; content, author notes. SA
Nantucket is a small island about 30 miles off the coast of Massachusetts. Conroy, with some college friends, spent a summer there "in the Eisenhower years." Thereafter, he returned frequently, building a summer place that became his year-round home for a time. Conroy takes us on many walks through Nantucket as it has changed, and not changed, across the years. Whaling made it fabulously wealthy in the mid-1800s, and many of the old homes on the island have been rejuvenated rather than torn down and replaced.
Conroy's reading is warm and wonderful as he creates pictures of how Nantucket looks and feels, so vivid that the listener can see images of playing piano in a nightclub, children heading into town in complete safety, his try at scallop fishing, high-powered development aimed at increasing tourism--even parking problems in Nantucket.
