Philip Mercer, geological engineer, adventurer, and special science advisor to the President of the United States, is called by the government to Area 51 in Nevada and an underground tunnel excavation. A disaster has killed several members of the team creating the tunnel. Of course, it's not as simple as it might sound. A long and complex series of events ensues with an abundance of technical detail involving machinery, weapons, air and sea craft. This sometimes tends to impede the action; but those who love that kind of thing (Clancy and Cussler fans) will probably enjoy it all. Philip Mercer may be a distant relative of Cussler's Dirk Pitt but Mercer is relentlessly brutal in dealing with villains. J. Charles narrates with professional aplomb, as always, effortlessly changing characters, voices, accents and keeping the action moving at a good pace.
