Great fieldbus coverage
Thank you for the excellent coverage of fieldbus technology in the November issue of In Tech. It provided the most complete look at fieldbus to date. I also appreciate your coverage of Fieldbus Foundation and their activities.

Kudos!
Congratulations on an excellent fieldbus issue! For the first time, a journal put excellent summary articles on all the significant fieldbuses in one issue.

More Kudos!
"How fieldbus will affect DCS architecture" by William R. Hodson (November In Tech) was a very well-written, informative article. Thank you for providing this kind of content.

LonWorks protocol
The Viewpoint editorial in your November 1996 issue, "Reducing confusion about fieldbuses . . .," adds confusion regarding the LonWorks protocol.
Although you mention that LonWorks was invited to participate, I can only imagine that there was a communication failure between Echelon and In Tech as they would have jumped at the opportunity to participate in your fieldbus roundup.
One comment in the Viewpoint editorial, "However, LonWorks is primarily used for nonprocess-related applications . . ," is not correct. A number of companies have been using LonWorks in industrial process control applications for several years. The LonWorks protocol spans both bit-level and device-level communication requirements and, as such, offers a good solution for interoperable data exchange where logic and continuous data are integrated in a unified structure.
We, as control system providers, due mainly to the delay in fieldbus standardization, will be required to offer any number of fieldbus solutions. Eventually the market will decide if one single fieldbus will dominate. As a source of technical information to the process industries, In Tech should attempt to give readers objective feedback on real fieldbus implementations and not necessarily marketing hype from promoters.
