Pride and Prejudice
Jacqueline EdwardsPRIDE AND PREJUDICE. Jane Austen. 2005. Read by Emilia Fox. 11 cds. 13 hrs. Naxos Audiobooks. 9-62634-356-7. $55.00. Cardboard; plot, reader notes. SA*
This is the fifth reading of Pride heard by this listener; and Fox's stands out for many qualities. Its sprightliness and sweetness reflect the sparkling mood of the author's original. Its excellent phrasing renders the 19th-century syntax most closely to our contemporary style. Its interpretation of dialog is subtle and true. Some of the characterizations are superb, and noteworthy for conveying the youth of most of the principal characters. Fox seems to have approached Austen's brilliant novel as a good story rather than a classic antique and the result is simply delightful. The cardboard box with individual, annotated cardboard CD holders is particularly compact, convenient and attractive. Highly recommended. Jacqueline Edwards, Bedford, MA
