Football: ROBINSONSWANS IN

ANDREW THOMAS

ANDY ROBINSON struck a first-half winner for Swansea at the Causeway Stadium to knock high-flying Wycombe off their perch at the top of League Two.

Since their opening day defeat to Rochdale, Tony Adams' side have taken to life in League Two with aplomb, and their recent form had propelled them to the top of the table.

But this was a nightmare result which saw Kenny Jackett's plucky side pilfer the points with a hard-working and tenacious display. Swansea's Kristian O'Leary fired in an early effort from 25 yards which sailed inches over the crossbar - which proved a warning shot which the hosts failed to heed.

Just minutes later an outswinging corner on the right by Spaniard Roberto Martinez saw O'Leary fire in a fierce effort from just six yards out which keeper Frank Talia did well to parry. Robinson then struck when he latched on to Andy Gurney's neat pass to slip the ball home from six yards out to give Swansea the lead.

Wanderers finally awoke from their slumber and Bas Savage sent in a teasing cross which was well cleared by O'Leary.

Gary Silk's long throw then caused confusion in the Swansea defence, which led to Clint Easton firing in a left-footed effort from the edge of the box which Swans' keeper Willy Gueret managed to save comfortably.

The visitors remained a threat, however and Martinez sent in a dangerous outswinging corner which was well cleared by Roger Johnson.

Keith Ryan's 25-yard effort then sailed narrowly wide as the hosts began to use their possession to up the tempo.

Nathan Tyson fired over from a similar distance, but after the interval a similar pattern emerged, with the hosts unable to fashion any real clear-cut opportunities.

Adams replaced Savage and on-loan defender Charlie Comyn-Platt with Ian Stonebridge and Gus Uhlenbeek during the second-half, but it was all to no avail.

Tyson's overhead kick in the dying minutes sailed over as the Swans held on for a precious victory.
