COUNCILLORS in Sligo are split over whether to spend pounds 15,000 on roads or to fund a monument to one of Ireland's freedom-fighting heroines.

A group which is planning to erect a monument to Countess Markieviecz outside Sligo Town Hall has asked the council for the pounds 15,000 lump sum.

Cllr Sean McManus said: "We must support this monument to honour the memory of a woman who devoted her life towards seeking Irish freedom. It's a disgrace she hasn't been honoured before now in her native county."

But Cllr Paul Conmy said: "I want to see a monument to the pot holes on our road instead." However, Cllr Declan Bree said: "We should offer finances for the monument but we haven't provided for it in the budget."
