MY PAP PICS: JOHN MCENROE; 'I told Bill Clinton how to run the world'
Words: Christine Smith.Doin' what comes naturally
Oh my God, this is a scary hair picture. Look at my curls! Here I was expressing my usual anger on court. It was at Wimbledon that I became famous for my outbursts, but I just got frustrated because I believed in what I was fighting for. My dad used to say, 'You don't need to get upset, you are better than these guys.' I was like, 'Well, that's easy for you to say.' I just couldn't help it. It meant I heaped even more pressure on myself, but I couldn't change that. But in fact, the average Joe on the street didn't mind that I swore.
The president and me
Here I am with President Clinton. I liked the guy - he's very smart and he knew a surprising amount about tennis. I have to admit I was impressed. It was great to watch the match with him. I was explaining my views on how he could improve world politics. He looks like he was listening - I hope he was.
Champion double act
This was one of my funny pizza ads when I get to try and loosen up Pete Sampras. I had a great time making them. Pete is arguably the greatest player who has ever lived. He was simply superb and I wish I could have played against him on court. But obviously I didn't, because he's younger than me. Do I like him? I think it would be good if we could spend some time together, as we come from different times in terms of our tennis. When he wants to, Pete can definitely have a personality.
Family man
Here I am strolling along with my wife Patty Smyth and Sean - one of my sons from my marriage to Tatum O'Neal - who is now 16. This was taken a while back as I have a goatee beard. I thought they looked good then. My family mean everything to me and I absolutely love being a dad. Between Patty and I, we have six kids, which can be a handful, but I love it. Being a dad is very rewarding and my children have given me so much pleasure. There is no job like it.
My ex-wife
Tatum O'Neal was my first wife. We met when she was 20 and I was 25, we had three kids in five years, and if you add in all the complications of our lives, it seems impossible it could ever have worked. We divorced in 1994 and it wasn't pleasant. Divorce never is, especially when kids are involved, but I feel I'm out the other side now. I'm so lucky to have met Patty.
A winning moment
What an incredible day. It was 1992, I was 33, and it was the last doubles match I ever played at Wimbledon. I was so tired and burned out from the tennis I'd played over the years, and in this match, the final score was 19 games to 17 in the fifth set. The umpire wanted to stop at 13 games all, but I begged to finish the match that day so I could get home to my kids. The cheering from the crowd carried me through and my partner Michael Stich and I went on to win. It was a wonderful feeling.
Fitting in a quick mouthful on the job
You need to eat to keep your energy up when you are commentating, so I'm tucking into a burger here. Working on the BBC's Wimbledon coverage means long hours, so I just grab food when I can. It's a lot of fun though. I'm there all the time, which I really like as I get to see all the matches, and hopefully people like what I have to say. I don't just talk for the sake of it, I also try to let the matches speak for themselves.
John, Tom and Rita too
This is me and Patty with Tom Hanks. This was taken when we went to the premiere of Tom's film Cast Away. Patty and Tom's wife Rita Wilson, who produced My Big Fat Greek Wedding, are good friends. Tom is one of the greatest actors of our generation and I really admire his work. He is incredibly down-to-earth, a great dad and husband, and he's a good friend too. I can't think of anything bad to say about him.
Chilling out with Bjorn
That guy lying down can't be me, he looks too fat. Jesus, it is! This was on the day of my wedding to Patty and I was relaxing on the beach beforehand with Bjorn Borg, who was seeing that girl. Bjorn was the only tennis player who came to my wedding, which was what I wanted. He's the one guy I didn't have a problem with on or off court and he was an amazing player. My wedding to Patty was a wonderful day.
