RUGBY HEROES RADIO WAR; It's Gareth v Ieuan v Nigel
IAN CAMERONALL-time rugby great Gareth Edwards is going into battle against two Welsh heroes of the Nineties by spearheading a bid to launch a radio station.
Seventies ace Gareth - recently named the world's best-ever rugby player - is representing a consortium bidding for a new radio service for South Wales.
But he's up against wingers Ieuan Evans and Nigel Walker who are also fronting bids from other companies keen on winning the licence for the same wavelength. Gareth, 52, is chairman of the Radio Corporation - a consortium set up for a station called Rox-Wales 105.
Former Wales captain Ieuan, 35, is one of the leading lights in the South Wales Radio Ltd group which also wants the licence.
And Nigel, 36, is a key player in the rival bid by Nation 105 FM.
Up to a dozen others are expected to join the bidding for the station - which will broadcast across an 80-mile belt between Swansea and the Severn Bridge - when it goes on air next year .HOW THEY LINE UPEVANSIEUAN Evans has 72 caps and 33 tries for Wales. He skippered the team 28 times and was a British Lion. He proved himself in broadcasting as an ITV Rugby World Cup commentator.EDWARDSGARETH Edwards played 53 times for Wales, 13 as captain, and scored a record 20 tries. A seasoned broadcaster, he said: "I'm delighted to be involved in this marvellous project."WALKERNIGEL Walker scored 12 tries during his 17 caps - eight playing on the opposite wing to Ieuan. He is an all-round media star who has his own TV quiz show.
