Mexican bid to ban term "ham" for non pork goods - Brief Article
Mexico's Pork Producers' Council (CMP) has called for the banning of the use of the term "ham" for all non pork products, such as "turkey ham", the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) reported in its latest report. Its primary complaint is that permitting poultry producers to use the term "ham" violates a Mexican federal law, Mexico's labelling regulations and voluntary industry standards regarding specifications for cooked ham. They say their failure to enforce existing laws and standards represents unfair competition. The CMP's latest proposal is unlikely to have any big impact, according to the USDA, given that the Mexican National Council of Packers of Cold Cuts and Offals has not supported their efforts.
