A View from the Woods - helping children learn while they are at camp - Brief Article - Editorial
Peg L. SmithI recently attended a school board meeting at my sons' school. The board members and teachers were tossing around words and phrases like "tutors," "remediation," "summer school," "after-school programs," and "teaching the test skills," but not once did they mention children. I wanted to scream, "What about my children?" My children - all children - cannot be represented simply by a score. Is the answer to improved academic performance simply "more" or "sporadic intense remediation"? I think not.
I believe the answer is a full immersion into a holistic, developmental learning calendar. A system that includes parents, schools, and community programs - such as camp! A new paradigm that integrates the best of school and camp. Experiential learning activities (for teachers and children) that engage children emotionally, physically, cognitively, and socially will advance their formal academic performance.
But why was no one else at the meeting ready to scream? Well, I have an IDEA. An IDEA for which we are responsible and which we must share with others so they may know what we do.
IDEA
we must illustrate with stories, pictures, and videos the images that demonstrate camp's value.
we must succinctly define and describe the essential elements that are unique to the camp experience. We must tell others what we do and why it is important.
we must offer evidence that is measurable. We must pursue valid research findings that support our powerful stories and images.
we must assert by using the power of our collective voices to ensure that we are heard.
I believe we have a moral responsibility to change the world for today's and tomorrow's children. Learning is fun! It's a journey of exploration, discovery, and friendship. Camp owners, directors, counselors, staff, parents, and campers alike must promote the essential elements of the camp experience so we can help preserve the wonder of childhood and the enchantment of learning. I have an idea. Let's share it.
