Rise Up: a Call to Leadership for African American Women
Tracey D. Weaverby Sylvia Rose InterVarsity Press, July 2004 $13.00, ISBN 0-830-83212-2
Rose's message that we should strive to walk in God's calling in our lives with courage and conviction is not new. The advice, however, is delivered in a beautiful package containing golden nuggets of wisdom wrapped in powerful, modern-day examples.
Rose's book is divided into chapters that deal with various attributes of leadership. The author's focus on women and on characteristics well honed by black women elevates her work above the mass of motivational books on the market.
Rose also makes moving analogies to biblical leaders and current African American female leaders. In each chapter, she illustrates her point with reference to a contemporary leader. Finally, Rose is not afraid to challenge women to face their shortcomings.
Her encouraging tone paints a beautiful forest for those of us who sometimes get lost amid the trees of our everyday lives and limitations.
