Breastfeeding and iron
Meredith FisherI am a mother of a 5-year-old son, a 3-year-old son, and a 10-month-old daughter. I recently took my daughter in for her 9-month well-baby checkup. The pediatrician was concerned with the fact that she is strictly breastfed. He thought my milk alone could not provide the correct amount of iron. I argued that my other two children are later than recommended and their hemoglobin levels were fine. Long story short, he was convinced she was anemic and sent her for blood work. While waiting for the results, I consulted my midwife and was informed that many mothers are being harassed about how and when they introduce solid food. I also surfed the Net for information on breastfeeding and anemia. What I found was reassuring. Lo and behold, her iron count was normal. The site www.babyreference.com/Iron%20Supplements.htm has more information.
