Easy does it: cool looks for hot days - beauty strands - Brief Article
Pamela EdwardsCome summer, the last thing you want to fuss with is your hair. Rather than giving in to the elements, weatherproof your tresses with gorgeous off-the-face dos, like the three low-maintenance styles we've highlighted this month. And stay cool.
ALL TIED UP (Previous page) If you're blessed with long locks, you can get this look by first wrapping elasticized material (our model used the leg from a pair of pantyhose) around the head twice. Secure the ends in a knot at the nape. Then, starting at the ear, take an individual lock from each side and tie together into a knot at the center of the head. Repeat about five times (each tie should secure the loose ends of the previous one) until a mohawklike bundle is created. Finish with your favorite band or barrette.

TRIPLE PLAY (Left) Stylist Solange Mulange of the Khamit Kinks Salon in New York City created these inverted cornrows by adding more and more high-lighted human hair as the braid progressed from top to end. To keep it neat, Mulange applied gel to hold down nape hair and strays. Try Prive Relaxing Gel.

A CUT ABOVE (Below) Keith Campbell of the Time Salon in Brooklyn styled this modern 'fro on hair in transition from relaxed to natural. He created the buzz cut with regular-size clippers, leaving the top longer and tapering the sides. The model's own sun-kissed highlights offer the perfect panache for summer.

summer hair repair
* Our hair is just as susceptible to sun damage as our skin. If you're going to be out for a long period of time, cover up with a wide-brim hat or scarf.
* Color-treated hair needs extra protection to prevent fading. Look for products that protect against seasonal damage like Pantene Pro-V Conditioning Spray Color Protector.
* To counter the effects of sun, salt and chlorine, deep-condition weekly. Try Redken All Soft Heavy Cream.
* Although nothing beats a proper shampoo and conditioning, Sea Breeze, applied with a cotton swab, can be a great refresher for a sweaty scalp.
