Reviews and previews are fine for objective viewpoints on a game, but if you want to know what the editors just plain like, well--we'll tell you. Here's what Nich's loving, what he's watching, and what he's mocking.
Playing Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - Xbox It's a lot buggier and more frustrating than most reviews would let on, but I'm finding it hard to put down anyway. I'm always up for meaningful choices in my RPGs.
Disgaea: Hour of Darkness - PS2 Nippon Ichi's a favorite developer of mine, though it was always hard to defend my tastes. Now I have the perfect excuse in this gem of a strat-RPG.
Soul Calibur II - GCN Exactly what a lapsed fighting game player like me needed to rekindle interest in the genre after the long, long years away. So long as I have a fellow scrub to practice on, of course.
Silent Hill 3 - PS2 Not really my favorite game in the series, but since it's as unrelentingly scary and atmospheric as ever, terms like "disappointment" seem ludicrous.
.hack//Outbreak - PS2 The ever-increasing difficulty levels are getting a little frustrating, but other than that, my interest in the series is as high as it's ever been.
Watching Space Channel 5 Collection - PS2 Critics at the time said Space Channel 5 was too short, but I've played that game over and over the way I would a favorite album. The imported Part 2 is even better, with some really interesting level structure, more dynamic backing tracks, and funkier-than-belief music. The only thing that could possibly ruin this for me is a poor localization for Part 2's dialogue, which I trust Agetec to get right.
Mocking Outrun 2 - Xbox It takes a special type of gamer to care about manifolds and torque and jib-sails and other car parts, as you'll probably have to in Outrun 2. But who doesn't love, as the end credits of SC5 put it, "music, games, and peace?" Shifty-eyed Communist David Smith, that's who.
