More chemical dangers
Mona DoyleConsumers who worry about chemicals have more justification for their concern thanks to a DuPont whistle-blower who is making news with claims that "candy, butter, popcorn, and baked goods are being tainted with a potentially cancer-causing chemical that seeps out of grease-resistant packaging." The chemical, Zonyl, is used in clamshell boxes for McDonald's burgers and ConAgra popcorn bags. As soon as the news broke, one of our consumers e-mailed us a "Wouldn't you know it!" message. "I've known that microwave popcorn bags couldn't possibly be safe for a long time, but I hate finding out I was right!"

This is the kind of news that drives more shoppers to Whole Foods, where those with safety-concerns feel safer. If supermarkets don't act like they care, they'll drive more consumers to stores that they believe do care.
