No fear
James Freeman"I can't do it. I've never been good at this. I need more practice, more time. Oh, I hope they don't ask me."
How many times has this "tape" rewound and played back in your mind? So often we face nervousness, fear and self-doubt. We get the call but we cannot answer. The call might be volunteer work, maybe help with cooking, cleaning, or serving at a retirement home. You may be asked to help with Sunday School or Bible camp. The choir may need help, or there is a spot for you organizing a fund drive.
Why is it that one of our worst fears, Christians included, is public speaking? What is so difficult about saying "Yes" when asked to give a talk, to stand up and share, or to testify to God working in our lives?
With the guidance of the Holy Spirit there is no "wrong way" or "right way." There is God's way. It is God working through us.
Now give yourself a test. For example, next time you volunteer to give a talk, sing a song, lead a Bible study, or even wash dishes ... take note. Who is your worst critic? Who analyzes and says "You could have done better," or "You should have done it this way or that way." If you are crippled by those awkward voices in your head, then maybe you forgot to pray for guidance in Jesus' name.
The spirit of fear and doubt has no place in the mind and heart guided by the Holy Spirit. "So do not fear, for I am with you ... I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand" (Isaiah 41:10).
"For God did not give us a spirit of timidity ... so do not be ashamed to testify about our Lord" (2 Timothy 1:7,8).
