Airmen advance to world triathlon
Mary Young6/24/2003 - NAVAL BASE VENTURA COUNTY, Calif. (AFPN) -- The Air Force team finished exactly one hour behind the winning Army team at the 2003 Armed Forces Triathlon held at Point Mugu here June 16 to 22.
It ranked behind both the Army and Navy teams with a total time of 25 hours, 49 minutes, 4 seconds. The Marine Corps did not have enough competitors to qualify for a team score.
First Lt. Matthew Nuffort was the first airman to finish, placing third overall in the mens division.
Top Air Force racers in the womens division were Capts. Camilla Stock and Erika Foster who finished overall fourth and fifth, respectively, with times of 2:10:14 and 2:15:36.
The 125 triathletes competed in a 1500-meter (about one mile) swim in the ocean, a 40K (about 25 miles) bike race and a flat 10K (6.2 miles) run.
The top six finishers in each division will represent the U.S. Armed Forces at the 2003 Conseil International du Sport Militaire World Military Triathlon Championship in Drotten, Holland, July 28 to Aug. 4. (Courtesy of Air Force Services Agency)
