Food Fights: Tales From the Restaurant Trade
Duncan, Susan LFood Fights: Tales From the Restaurant Trade by Fred Bonnie (Black Belt Press, $24)
The quirky inhabitants of these Southern-set short stories work in old-fashioned diners and white-linen establishments, sweat over steam tables, wash endless stacks of dishes, and spend long days catering to customers. They grapple, too, with love, desire, death, robbery, and used-car salesmen.
'Thanh Ho Delivers," set in the alleys of Birmingham, explores the lives of three Vietnamese immigrants who own and deliver Thanh Ho's Gourmet Pizza. Newly reunited with her mother and sister, Thanh-who fled Saigon in a nightmarish escapedreams of commercial success. Her wobbly driving skills and a terror-filled night of delivery do nothing but strengthen her luminous desire to survive.
Author Fred Bonnie, a former Southern Living garden editor who now resides in North Carolina, possesses a wonderful flair for gently off-kilter humor. Placing his stories squarely in the middle of Southern eateries, he reminds us that, for Southerners, sharing a meal opens the door to sharing stories. Susan LC Duncan
