Arto Jarvela: Far In!
Mark D. MossARTO JARVELA Far In! Oart 3
Arto Jarvela is best known as one of the leaders of the stellar Kaustinen fiddle ensemble JPP. One of the first generation of graduates from the Sibelius Academy's folk music program that kick-started the Finnish folk renaissance in the late 1980s, he's been a part of a wide range of his country's folk musical highlights ever since: from Niekku to JPP to the Helsinki Mandoliners to Aldargaz to Pinan Pojat and lots more. For this third solo project, Arto has brought together the compositions he's written in a wide range of styles, from Quebecois to Pakistani to Gypsy and, of course, his beloved Kaustinen style. For anyone who has heard Arto perform, there's no denying his prowess as an instrumentalist--he plays both fiddle and mandolin with a grace and vocabulary that only comes with a player of the first order, and the fact that he plays everything here--adding kantele, guitar, bass, nyckelharpa, jaw harp, marimba, even octave flute and a host of percussion instruments to his arsenal--only amplifies his skill as a musician. What makes this release really special is how clearly it demonstrates his skill as a composer and arranger, as well. Arto is world class, and this release does him well.
