Millennium dam warning
Ruth HughesPLANS to dam the Thames on New Year's Eve to make way for a massive floating carnival will destroy wildlife say conservationists, writes Ruth Hughes.
Under the proposals by the millennium party organisers, the high tide will be trapped inside the Thames Barrier from 6pm until after midnight, to create a giant lagoon for the display.
But the Environment Agency, which is responsible for the barrier, warns: "There is a possibility of deterioration in the water quality, sewerage overflow and low oxygen levels which will all damage wildlife."
