A comfortable retreat

Kimberly and Nelson Bean had just a few requirements for their new family room. They wanted it to be warm and inviting, with builtin bookshelves and lots of light.

To give richness and warmth to the room, Kimberly, an interior designer, selected a combination of chocolate brown and deep red to mix with neutral tones. A floral stripe covers all the upholstered furniture in the room. "I wanted a fabric that's durable and doesn't show dirt," says Kimberly. "It also is a classic pattern that's timeless." She had a custom shade of red paint created for the walls that echoes the red in the fabric.

The new addition extends from the back of the house. Windows are on three sides. Heavy window treatments with an empire valance help create warmth while at the same time allowing plenty of light in the room. The beige check complements the floral fabric on the upholstered furniture. Brush fringe combined with a braid adds detailing along the valance and panels.

Art and collectibles are arranged to create a focal point above the sofa. The iron architectural piece was found at a flea market, the watercolor was given to her by her mother, and the two oils were painted by a friend. The majolica salad plates were purchased while on a trip to Cape Cod. "Don't be afraid to mix your collectibles to make an interesting wall arrangement," says Kimberly. As a tip she suggests you work out the configuration on the floor before you start hammering nails in the wall.

Bookshelves extend across the far wall and house the entertainment center, along with plenty of storage. Two window seats were added as cozy nooks that display small treasures. Sandra Allen Lynn
