Design: purple reigns
David C. BeckerArchitect Mark Wienke gave the less-is-more concept of a Zen garden a vibrant twist in his Santa Barbara backyard by using vividly hued corrugated plastic.

"I love corrugated," says Wienke. "We were thinking of metal at one time--using the galvanized stuff--but realized it would be a little shiny." That led him to a local home improvement center, where he was delighted to find corrugated plastic in a translucent lavender-blue that changes color in different light conditions. "I just about jumped out of my shoes!"
Wienke bought 35 panels in 8- and 10-foot lengths (about $9 and $12 each, respectively) and attached them to a redwood fence. Backlit cutouts adorn panels at one end, and a moveable firepit makes a cozy place to relax on cool evenings.
