Compaq Prepares to License Alpha Technology in Japan
Compaq Computers (03-5463-6600) has proposed licensing of the 'Alpha' 64-bit RISC CPU technology to Japanese computer makers. It has already licensed it to Samsung. Compaq gained the technology as it acquired DEC last year. The Alpha is not only compatible with Unix systems as originally designed, but also with Windows NT. Compaq sees it as a strategic product in the world market and wants to develop products for the nonstop 'Himalaya' system, Unix servers and PC servers. RISC products are seen favorably so far by manufacturers; among them is Fujitsu which uses Sun Microsystems' RISC microprocessor.
