St. Luke's-Memorial renovates maternity and pediatric floors

UTICA -- St. Luke's-Memorial Hospital Center launched the new $9.1-million renovation and expansion of its maternity/pediatric floors with a "steel-raising" ceremony recently. The ceremony was held on the helicopter pad near the mental-health unit, followed by a brief program to celebrate the beginning of the project and to announce a $2-million capital campaign to help fund it.

The project had been in the planning stages for five years. The breakthrough came this fall when the New York State Department of Health brokered an agreement between St. Luke's Hospital and St. Elizabeth Hospital . As part of the agreement, St. Luke's will handle 100 percent of the maternity cases in the Mohawk Valley area, while St. Elizabeth will handle 100 percent of acute, nonpediatric cardiac cases.

"The cost and scope of the project have changed since 1991," explains Dr. Robert Smith, co-chairperson for the maternity/pediatric capital campaign. He adds, "With the redesign of our labor and delivery, our nurseries and our patient rooms, as well as the expansion of our pediatric floor, we have had to make a greater commitment to fundraising to ensure that the project has all the elements that the physicians, nurses, hospital family, and our patients think are necessary."

The two-floor construction above the mental-health unit will include a new area for endoscopy and a new cardiac-catheterization lab on the lower level, as well as the new labor and delivery floor on the upper level, which will be linked to the third-floor maternity unit.

The construction will add approximately 30,600 square feet to St. Luke's-Memorial Hospital. In addition, 18,200 square feet will be renovated. Eleven beds will be added, bringing the total at St. Luke's-Memorial to 266.

The outside construction of the two new floors is expected to be completed by December 1996. The interior construction for the two floors is scheduled for completion by early June 1997. The addition is designed by Hoffman, O'Brien, Look, Taube & Chiang, PC, an Ithaca-based architectural firm. The general contractor for the project is Charles A. Gaetano Corporation. Gaetano Corp. won praise from St. Luke's-Memorial's CEO Andrew Peterson recently for completing the $16-million St. Luke's Home under budget and ahead of schedule.
