Arab leaders to blame - Letters to the Editor
Samuel I. GreenbergThis is too much! Mashhood Rizvi and Edward W. Said both blame America for the terrible events of the Middle East (November issue). Nowhere is there mention of Saddam Hussein, who started it all, and could end it all if he lived up to the terms of the cease-fire. How dare they!
I deeply deplore some of the actions of America and Israel. They have done wrong on many occasions, but the terrible leaders of the Arabs have compounded the problems of the Middle East over the years.
There would be a State of Palestine now if the Arabs had accepted the U.N. partition, in many ways the best plan. After the '48 War, Jordan controlled the West Bank and could have given the Palestinians their independence, but King Abdullah wanted it as part of his kingdom.
It would still be part of Jordan if King Hussein had not joined in the '67 war against Israel. And it would be on the road to statehood now if Yasser Arafat had accepted the generally favorable terms that Ehud Barak offered.
