North Carolina
James BakerNort Carolina By George Humphries and Clyde Edgerton Portland, OR: Graphic Arts Publishing Company, 2003 144 pages, color, $39.95
Native North Carolinians, photographer George Humphries and essayist Clyde Edgerton, have combined their talents to produce a definitive look at their "Old North" state.
Using 118 9x12 color photographs to support their "alive and vibrant and welcoming" home state. Humphries and Edgerton go from the barrier islands to maritime forests, to salt marshes, to cypress sloughs, to Carolina bays in their love affair with North Carolina.
Humphries' lush color photographs are particularly effective when they concentrate on on the natural beauty of North Carolina. A field of red and pink poppies in Buncombe County or the view of the stone top of Grandfather Mountain are prime examples. Humphies and Edgerton have provided a feast for the armchair traveler and an instructional storehouse for the landscape photographer.
