Disney gives moviegoers another `Treasure'
Sarah Mason Central ValleyTreasure Planet / Rated PG
Disney has found success again with its latest animated film, "Treasure Planet." This movie takes you into a wondrous universe, full of things past, present and future.
You'll meet evil pirates like John Silver, who is chasing after the gold rumored to be on "Treasure Planet," a lost world said to be at the farthest "corner" of the universe. Silver and his band of cutthroats will do anything to get their fingers on the treasure. But heroes like the fearless boy Jim Hawkins are there to save the day.
With help from an astrophysicist, Doctor Doppler, these two heroes traverse the universe, lead to the gold by a special map. They are unaware that their ship is about to be taken over by Silver and his nasty crew.
But far worse than being overtaken by a band of pirates is being betrayed by a friend. At first, Silver befriends our hero Hawkins, then turns around and takes over the ship, severing the trust and friendship the two had built.
Silver wants only the sparkling gold, and Hawkins wants to prove to Silver and everyone else that he will not give up. When they crash land on Treasure Planet, Hawkins meets a robot who knows (but can't remember) the planet's secrets, including where to find the treasure. When Hawkins finds the loot, Silver is right at his back, sword drawn and ready to take every last bit of the treasure that Hawkins (and his friends) found.
As the pirates celebrate their bounty, they fall into a trap. Silver is caught between his soft spot -- saving Hawkins -- and his greed for the treasure.
It's all there: the message, the music, the characters. Voices provided by David Hyde Pierce, Martin Short, Emma Thompson and Brian Murray bring the charcters to life on the screen. They are full of personality and depth.
This is a welcome chance to be a kid again (or bring one that you know). Come fly among the stars like Peter Pan, speak to "Star Wars"- like aliens, and battle the pirates of Treasure Island. It's a treasure.
