Professor Capobianchi gets international award

Massimo Capobianchi, an associate professor of mechanical engineering at Gonzaga University, has been honored with a Student Section Adviser Award by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers during the 2002 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition in New Orleans.

The award is presented to an ASME member whose leadership and service qualities have contributed to the program and operations of a student section of the society for at least three years. Capobianchi, who has been an associate professor at Gonzaga since 2001, joined the department of mechanical engineering at the university as an assistant professor in 1996.

Matthew Gower, son of Robert and Karen Gower, Spokane, was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout by Troop 242 in September.

Gower, a varsity tennis player for Rogers High School, landscaped a corner of Andrew Rypien Field for the Spokane Youth Sports Association for his Eagle service project.

Galen Satterlee, a junior at Arizona State University, is among eight students that have been chosen for a new research team working with the university president to meet strategic objectives. Satterlee, an honors student majoring in economics and finance, is a 2000 graduate of Shadle Park High School.

Air National Guard Senior Airman Heidie Smith graduated from the information management apprentice course at Keesler Air Force Base, Biloxi, Miss. A 1996 graduate of Cheney High School, Smith is the daughter of Rella and John Grimes of Kettle Falls, Wash.

Air Force Airman Christopher Ferrell graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio. Ferrell, a 2002 graduate of Grants Pass (Ore.) High School, is the son of Carol Hopper, Spokane, and Jerry Ferrell, Grants Pass.

Air Force Airman 1st Class Ben Holmesmith graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio. Holmesmith, a 2002 graduate of Lewis and Clark High School, is the son of Kit and Gary Holmesmith, Spokane.

Army National Guard Pvt. Juan Torres graduated from the heavy- wheeled vehicle mechanic advanced individual training course at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. Torres is the son of Mona Cortez of Othello, Wash., and a 2001 graduate of Othello High School.

Air Force Airman Aaron Startin graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio. Startin is the son of Rod Startin, Spokane, and a 2000 graduate of Mead High School.
