MODELING THE GEEPS ...
This month's column is the first in a series about modeling the C&O Geep fleet. Don't worry - I'm not going to do another marathon set like the wooden water tanks for a while! I'll present prototype data this month, then at random intervals over the next year or so model a specific engine.
Keep in mind that the following spotting features were for the units as built, and that the further away in time one goes the more changes were done. A couple of publications I found to be invaluable in tabulating this data were the C&O Diesel Data book, the "Phases at a Glance" series by Mainline Modeler, and Extra 2200 South 's C&O roster.
AS-BUILT C&O GEEP SPOTTING FEATURES
GP7 Phase I:
Sloping sheet metal boxes on the pilot steps
Cast buffer
Louver groups under cab (both sides)
2 louver panels on doors 2, 10, and 13
1 louver panel on door 1 in upper position
All fans 36" dia. (Including D.B.)
Long hood doors 86" high
Solid fuel tank skirt (an exception to this appears to be the
Canadian-built units which have a single long slot.)
GP7 Phase II:
MU hose boxes on the pilot steps
Dynamic brake fan increased to 48" after 7-52
Long hood doors shortened to 82" high after 3-52
Inspection holes in fuel tank skirt
No changes in louvers
GP7 Phase III and GP9 Phase I:
Louvers under cab disappear (still on battery box doors)
Fabricated buffer
2 louver groups added to door 4
1 louver group added to door 1 in lower position
Lower louver group deleted from door 13
GP9 Phase II:
2 louver groups added to door 5
Fuel filler moved forward on units built from 2-57
GP9 Phase III:
Large louver group on battery box door is changed to a small pair of louvers at top of the door
Fuel tank skirt cut away except around fuel filler
Fans changed to 48" diameter "pan" top fans in 10-57
Doors 1 and 2 have lower louver group removed
