The Chinese Canadian
Photographic Society of Toronto assisted a photo contest hosted by The Canadian Foundation for the Preservation of Chinese Cultural and Historical Treasures ("The Foundation"). The theme of this competition was Silk Road. The Foundation invited all photographers, amateurs or professionals, who had been to the Silk Road to participate in that contest.
The Silk Road is the most well known trading route of ancient Chinese civilization. Trading in silk grew under the Han Dynasty in the first and second centuries AD. Originally, the Chinese traded silk internally, within the empire. Zhang Qian, the first known Chinese traveler to make contact with the Central Asian tribes, later came up with the idea to expand the silk trade to include these tribes and, therefore, forged alliances with these Central Asian nomads. The Silk Road was born.
The Silk Road was not only an important trade route, but also and perhaps more significantly, an avenue for the exchange of ideas. The influence of foreign culture on Chinese culture had made the Silk Road a route full of fascinating scenery.
Prizes of the photo contest included return air ticket from Toronto to Asia, high-end digital cameras, and digital products.
Exhibitions were scheduled in four different locations in Toronto from January 29 to February 26 of 2005.
