Mary S. McCarthyThe Kimber-Vogan Award
Each year at the PSA Conference Nature Division Luncheon a number of awards are presented. Most of these are special awards established to recognize successful exhibitors in certain categories of nature photography in the PSA Conference's International Exhibition. Service awards recognize those individuals who have provided outstanding services to the Nature Division for a number of years.
The Kimber-Vogan Award, however, is unique. It is given to an exhibitor in PSA nature slide competition who has shown marked improvement in exhibition acceptances. The recipient must be a PSA member.
The Sam Vogan Award was established in 1953 by the widow of the late Sam Vogan, one of the pioneers of the Nature Division. Wilfred Kimber, FPSA, supervised the award after he himself won it in 1962. Upon his death, his widow provided funding to perpetuate the award to honor both Sam Vogan and Wilfred Kimber. Since then it has been the Wilfred Kimber-Sam Vogan Award.
The award recognizes a relative beginner in nature slide photography, usually a two-star or three-star exhibitor. It is given to someone who has made a great improvement in a short time as determined by a statistical formula which takes into consideration the number of PSA-approved exhibitions the candidate has entered and the number of acceptances per exhibition. Consideration is also given to other factors. It is important that the candidate contribute to photography through other activities and be well regarded by other photographers in his or her local area.
The Kimber-Vogan Award is not one for which someone can apply or be nominated, but the recipient can take great pride in his or her achievement. The award itself is a handsome plaque.
