How you'll know we've lost our civil liberties in the fight against terrorism

Terrorism and civil liberties
The Bill of Rights defines and sustains our civil liberties, the substance that makes this nation work. No enemy can destroy our fundamental rights - the right to free assembly and free speech, the right against unreasonable search and seizure, the right to due process and a speedy trial and more. Such ruin can only come from within.
Yet, history shows that with every war or military action comes the potential - and sometimes the reality - that constitutional protections will be curtailed. The terrorists' strikes make the threat real again. On the following pages, symposium contributors look at what we as editorialists can or ought to do to guard our civil liberties.
