THERE were two very similar names in the news last week: William Hagan, heroic captain of the Boeing 747, and William Hague, leader of the Conservatives.

It's impossible to confuse the two. One is a man who'll spend the next few years nervously looking over his shoulder, wondering if some fanatic will try to take control and plunge him into oblivion - the other's an airline pilot.
