Mark Your Calendar ... 1999 C&OHS Annual Conference Cincinnati August 11-14

We are beginning to give attention to the archives and to improving, updating, indexing, and properly storing and making available photos and drawings. As part of this effort, we advertised standard photo lists last month. I hope many of you will get them and place orders from them, thus using the vast store of images available in our collections. We did a General Arrangement drawing list last fall, and will soon update that with an appendix and issue some other useful ones. The response to it from the general membership was poor. This took me by surprise in some respects, but in others.I understand that unless you're going to manufacture or to scratch-build a car you don't need this level of detail.

One thing we have identified recently is our lack of good images showing late C&O era (1965-72), Chessie System era operations (1972-1986), and CSX operations (1986-present). If anyone has Any extra b&w or color negatives or color slides that you would like to donate to be included in the collection and made available for publication and for use by researchers, please send them to us ATTN: Archives, marked with date, location, subject, and photographer, so we can properly enter them.

We've added a few new diagram-style books this month as well. Painting and lettering drawings will be the next area of focus, since those seem to get a very good reception from members whenever we offer them. Remember, if you don't use the archives and thus allow it to generate some small percentage of income toward its support, it will remain largely dormant.

We expect to have a member survey next month, and I encourage everyone to respond to it and tell us who you are demographically and what you're most interested in.

Last month we also again printed the inquiry form. We haven't been able to respond to inquiries in a timely way before, but that is now cured, so feel free to send in the form by mail or fax and we'll do the best we can to help you. That's our most basic business and function ... the reason for our creation as an organization.

More model projects are on the way. All have been very successful to date. Thanks!
