Nine Lives
Karen WilsonNINE LIVES (Magnolia) Directed by Rodrigo Garcia
While many filmmakers adapt short stories, rarely do they successfully translate the rhythm of short fiction to the screen. Director Rodrigo Garcia (Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her, 2001) manages just fine with Nine Lives, which is constructed out of nine segments, each shot in a single take, focusing on a different woman dealing with family, love, and loss, and featuring an actress known for her high-caliber character work (Glenn Close, Lisa Gay Hamilton, Holly Hunter, Amy Brenneman, Mary Kay Place, Sissy Spacek, and the stand-out, Robin Wright Penn). Though the film lacks a cohesive narrative thread, it's hard to complain in the face of such breathtaking emoting.
