A call to arms

Dear Interview,

Reading your interview with Dr. Mathilde Krim [October 2005], founding chairman of amfAR and longtime leader against a global healthcare crisis, I was tempted to approach it as a retrospective, i.e., "Tell us what it was like when AIDS began." But Dr. Krim tacitly suggests that anyone who reads this interview as a glance backwards is not paying attention. Today, in 2005, the reality of AIDS is far worse than ever, and the disease continues to wreak havoc across the globe. To do battle with HIV/AIDS in the future, we must seriously consider Dr. Krim's words today.

Dr. Mathilde Krim is a national hero and deserves not just America's respect and admiration but that of the world as well. I was so thrilled to see her interviewed once more in your pages--not just because I admire her so profoundly but also because what she has to say is so important and so relevant, today as much as ever. And that's as true for the population at large as it is for me, a student of medicine. As depressing as I sometimes found her message to be, encountering anyone with her level of commitment and intelligence can only ultimately serve to uplift, inspire, and motivate.
