Honoring battered women volunteers, Rochester Drug Treatment Court

Scott Perkins

Here are some more Sneaker Awards.

Platinum Sneakers - To Annette Itkin and Betty Dryden for their years of volunteer service to Alternatives for Battered Women, Inc. (ABW). They were recently honored by ABW as the volunteers with the most longevity at ABW.

Itkin was among the very first volunteers for the organization and Dryden joined up not long after. That was more than fifteen years ago. Both work in the hotline office collecting statistics and keeping client records straight.

Gold Sneaker - To Rochester Drug Treatment Court for developing a link with the state Department of Labor to help its addicted graduates find jobs.

A liaison from the Labor Department spends three days a week in the courtroom to connect with addicts who are on the verge of completing the court's mandated treatment regimen. The drug court, created in 1995, has directed more than 560 offenders to local treatment providers.

Gold Sneakers - To Jeffrey H. Miller, who made a donation to the Department of Rare Books, Special Collections and Preservation at the University of Rochester. He donated a group of 21 postcards written by or to Susan B. Anthony. Miller graduated from the University of Rochester in 1996 and is a professor of microbiology at UCLA.

Miller's father purchased the postcards in the 1940s.

Seventeen of the postcards are to Anthony from Rachel Foster Avery. The postcards, written in 1883, are a particularly welcome addition, for they join a collection of 36 letters from Avery to Anthony and 161 letters from Anthony to Avery already in the collection.

Silver Sneakers - To Minetor & Co. and Roberts Communications for their Ad Council efforts. Minetor & Co. has launched a campaign for the Genesee Land Trust to raise awareness and educate the public about the importance of preserving open spaces. A team at Roberts Communications is helping Eldersource tell the public about the resources available for the elderly and their families. Eldersource reports that requests for information have increased since advertisements began running earlier this year.

Platinum Sneaker - To Fairport High School senior Aggie Lemesis for being named New York State winner of this year's Voice of Democracy speech contest last spring. The contest is sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Contestants were required to write and record an original essay between three and five minutes long on the topic, What Price Freedom. In selecting Lemesis' audio essay, judges noted that it was insightful, well written and delivered with a clear and dramatic voice.
