Here are some more Sneaker Awards

Platinum Sneaker - to Judge Michael J. Miller retired from Monroe County Family Court. Judge Miller was recently honored by Alternatives for Battered Women (ABW) for extraordinary commitment by an individual to stop domestic violence and to promote peace and hope in homes and communities.

In presenting the award, Monica Guardino, ABW's Board President described Judge Miller as a long-standing advocate for families and children.

Judge Michael Miller took the time to learn the issues involved with domestic violence, she said. He understands the important role the courts play in providing safety to victims and holding batterers accountable.

Judge Miller served as Monroe County Family Court Judge from May 1990 to December 2000. A graduate of Syracuse University College of Law, Judge Miller is now of counsel at Chamberlain, D'Amanda, Oppenheimer & Greenfield. He also serves on the Monroe County Juvenile Justice Council.

Gold Sneakers - To East High School's Kathy Smith, University of Rochester women's soccer coach Terry Gurnett, and Quad A For Kids. All will be recognized at the 24th Annual WHAM Sportswomen of the Year Awards Luncheon on Monday, April 29.

Smith will receive the 21st Annual Jean Giambrone Service Award. Gurnett is the tenth recipient of the WHAM Outstanding Achievement Award. Rene Portland, legendary Penn State University women's basketball coach, is the featured speaker.

Tickets for the lunch are $40 per person, with a table of 10 for $400. Seats can be purchased by calling the 24-hour Luncheon Hotline at 234-2055. The event has been a sell-out at 760-plus attendees for the past seven years.

Gold Sneakers - To the Syracuse University Alumni Club of Rochester. The club members are committed to volunteer their time and energy to paint and cleanup the Sojourner House on March 23. The Sojourner House is a not-for-profit organization that provides housing support services for women in need and for their children; to help them rebuild their lives and overcome their hardships.

Chair for this event is Bill Dwyer, a board member of the club. To volunteer, call him before March 20 at 282-8899 (days).

Silver Sneaker - To Signe L. Sherman, a former Rochesterian now living in Montana who recently donated several items to the George Eastman House including two photographs. One of a young child, was taken around 1890 and the other, of Rochester School 40 students, was taken in 1923. She has also become a member of the 900 East Avenue Society.
