Football: Cramb slam fails to save Crewe; HUDDERSFIELD 3 CREWE 1

DANIEL PRICE

CREWE have only themselves to blame after failing to capitalise on Colin Cramb's wonder goal.

Huddersfield's faithful were stunned two minutes before half-time when Chris Lumsden's flighted pass to within 20 yards of goal was thumped in on the volley by Cramb.

It came against the run of play and proved to be Crewe's only contribution of any quality to the game.

A minute after the restart they were picking the ball out of their own net as Simon Baldry's left foot strike put the home side level.

Fuming Crewe manager Dario Gradi blasted: "There was not one Crewe player that could control or pass the ball to a high enough standards today.

"We got a wonder goal, but we had been under incessant pressure and had to defend very well."

It was inevitable that Huddersfield - who have not won at home all season - would take the lead."

Their second came on 62 minutes when Baldry turned provider for Martin Smith to head home.

Six minutes later the home side went further ahead when Kevin Gallen re-directed Kenny Irons' shot into the net.

Huddersfield boss Lou Macari said: "Crewe's was a superb goal. Ours was lucky, but credit to the fans for staying with us."
