I WAS horrified to read in last week's Sunday Mirror that the Metropolitan Police could soon be recruiting small-time criminals.

Imagine sending for the police and expecting the arrival of an officer you can completely trust - only to find it's the same person who stole your grandfather's gold watch!

The devastating effect this idea could have on public confidence doesn't bear thinking about.
