Mail theft high during holidays

Brooke Walker KSL-TV

Packages at the door this time of year mean Christmas gifts, holiday surprises or that ordered item you have been waiting for. But for a thief, those packages mean opportunity.

Steve Kirkham knows that opportunity all too well. A Salt Lake service provider for UPS, Kirkham drops off some 400 packages each day during the holiday season.

"Our primary goal is for the person expecting the package to get the package," said Kirkham. "If we can make contact with people, that's what we want to do."

Kirkham's experience makes that focus a little easier. After seven years on the job, he is well acquainted with his route and with his customers.

"There are certain people that don't use the front door, so I leave it at the side door," he said. "We pick a spot where we know it's safe, that's out of sight, and nobody knows about it except us."

Kirkham suggests customers build that relationship with all of their regular mail-service providers. He said communicating about where and how items should be delivered is an important security step.

He also suggests, when possible, recipients anticipate potential deliveries.

"Sometimes it's a gift, so you won't know," Kirkham said. "But if you do know you have a package coming, try and be aware."

According to Taylorsville Police Sgt. Rosie Rivera, mail thefts are way up this time of year.

"I don't think the public realizes what you put in that mailbox, anyone can just drive by and take it from you," Rivera said.

Rivera advises following up on any sent items -- calling the intended receiver to make sure the delivery was complete.

Taylorsville police recently worked a series of mail thefts. On Sunday they arrested a 22-year-old, who they believe stole dozens of mailed items from mailboxes all over the valley.

"It's a big problem," Rivera said. "They look for gift certificates, any kind of gift cards, money in cards -- any sort of package. They try and pawn those things as quick as they can."

Rivera said during the holidays, alert observance can be the best gift to give.

"Neighbors need to take care of neighbors. If your neighbor isn't home during the day when mail is being delivered, watch their houses for them," she said. "We need the public to be our eyes."
