Michelle - YOUR LETTERS: Think twice before banning cigs
B SaundersIT'S good to see that the Health Minister Micheal Martin TD is so serious about the health risks posed by cigarette smoking (Irish Sunday Mirror, October 8).
However, I believe that the Minister is making a tactical error in the war against the tobacco industry by planning to ban the sale of 10-packs.
This move, I believe, will drive people, especially young people, into buying cheaper tobacco, such as roll- your-own cigarettes, which are are much more dangerous to people's health because they are non- tipped and much stronger in tar.
The Minister is to be commended on his efforts to try and rid this country of the scourge of cigarette smoking and its subsequent effect on the health of this nation.
But I believe that he should avoid any knee-jerk reaction.
