Rugby Union: Hayes' kicks wasted as Stewart sins; PONTYPRIDD 40

GLASGOW took a fourth minute lead with a 38-metre penalty from outside half Tommy Hayes, but from then on it was all downhill.

The dismissal of lock Stewart Campbell to the sin-bin for deliberate off-side in the 59th minute changed the game.

Welsh-Scottish League strugglers Pontypridd put a recent dismal run on the back burner to destroy the Reds in the second half, at Sardis Road.

Lee Jarvis gave Ponty a flying start to their Cup campaign with an outstanding display.

Fly-half Jarvis finished with 25 points as he converted all four Ponty tries, one of them his own, and landed four penalties.

Within minutes of Hayes' penalty Jarvis responded with an easy 22- metre kick in front of the post.

Ponty were having the better of the exchanges and in the 11th minute Jarvis edged his side ahead with a 38-metre goal.

Glasgow replied with another Hayes penalty.

Ponty returned on the offensive and took the lead with a gem of a try from Aussie lock Brent Cockbain after slick handling by the backs. Jarvis converted.

Hayes slotted over his third penalty in the closing stages of the half. Hayes and Jarvis again exchanged penalties for a 16-12 interval lead to Ponty.

Hayes cut the deficit to one point with his fifth penalty. Within minutes Jarvis banged over his fourth penalty.

Ponty increased their lead when Jarvis broke inside the 22 to send Paul John under the posts, and Jarvis converted.

Then Hayes struck his fifth penalty.

After Campbell was sin-binned, Ponty cut loose in the last quarter.

First Lenny Woodard crossed and Jarvis converted. Then Jarvis sprinted over halfway out.

Centre Alan Bulloch crossed for a late Glasgow consolation try that Hayes converted.
