In September, USS Essex (LHD-2) deployed with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit embarked and partick pated in a Special Operations Capable Exercise (SOCEX) near Okinawa, Japan.

The MEU was certified Special Operations Capable, meaning it is capable of executing several divers missions ranging from humanitarian assistance and disaster relief to full-scale combat operations. The Essex Amphibious Readiness Group (ARG) is comprised of LHD-2, USS Juneau (LPD-10) and USS Fort McHenry (LSD-43). Following are images of the SOCEX.
